CSR Challenge: Rutland Water Walk
Our 2018 Charity Challenge started with individual and team fundraising activities throughout the year, including protein snack sales and a family archery day; for the big finish, we completed a marathon-long walk around the Rutland Water Nature Reserve on what turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year.
We started our pre-walk preparation the evening before, with a BBQ and local ales at Belvoir Brewery, close to Melton Mowbray.
The following morning, fter full English breakfasts, we set off bright and early on a 26 mile walk around the Rutland Water Nature Reserve. After a quick "before" photo (above), we set off on an anti-clockwise route around the water. By 11am we were well into the Hambleton Peninsula and were glad of whatever shade we came across.
The second part of the morning was tough, as the temperature rose and the route took us along a tarmac road for several miles, before we reached beautiful chocolate-box villages. We eventually arrivedat the Horse & Jockey at around 1.30pm and we were all happy to have a sit down and a cold drink.
After an hour we set off for the second leg of the journey – thankfully this part of the walk was shorter and had several opportunities to take a short break or grab an ice-cream (which many of us did - it's never too late to carb load!). As we got closer to the finish line, the water became busier people paddling and sailing - trying to cool off in the heat. The only thing we could think about was getting to the end to grab an ice cold drink!
We finally finished around 5pm - tired, hot and achy, but pleased we’d completed the walk and stuck together throughout. It was a great day.
We are raising money for our charity partners - Spear and North Yorkshire Youth, organisations who both share the aim of helping young people realise their potential, local to our respective offices in London and Harrogate.
Thank you to all those who sponsored us and our charity partners - we really appreciate your support. If you haven't done so already, there's still time to donate: head to our fundraising page.
