Helping our local communities
We will be supporting Spear London and the Harrogate & Ripon Volunteer Centre in 2015 and beyond.
We consider Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and giving back to our community a vital part of building and maintaining a successful business. To find out more about our CSR activities, please visit this page.
In 2014, we engaged Ponte Consulting to help us find our perfect partner charities. Ponte is a CSR and communications consultancy that helps businesses engage with the community and find causes which match their strengths and values.
We want to support charities local to our London and Harrogate offices by providing them with fundraising, volunteering time, and recruitment expertise. We shortlisted and met three Yorkshire-based organisations and three London charities, and each New Street Group employee then voted for their preferred charity partner.
Our London office chose to support Spear in Tower Hamlets, a charity which offers local unemployed young people six-week employability courses. The course includes interview training, CV building, help with job applications and confidence building, supporting young people to get onto the career ladder.
Tower Hamlets is an economically dichotomised borough; it’s hosts some of London’s highest paid professionals in Canary Wharf, but also has the highest level of child poverty in England and the second highest unemployment rate in the capital. We all felt the Spear would be the ideal charity to get involved with to help improve the lives of disadvantaged young people in the borough. An impressive 75% of their graduates find work or further education within a year of completing one of their six-week courses.
We are helping Spear to continue their great work by volunteering our time and recruitment knowledge to mentor students on what today’s employers are looking for, and by looking to connect them to clients who may have positions for them on graduation.
Our Harrogate office selected the Harrogate& Ripon Volunteer Centre (HVC) who work with volunteers and over 250 community, voluntary and charity groups across North Yorkshire. The groups come to the HVC with requirements for volunteers, and the HVC connect them to people who want to help. With the obvious similarities to recruitment, we thought that this would be a great cause to support through funding, time and expertise. The Volunteer Centre does a wonderful job of helping many community projects, and in finding those people interested in volunteering the right organisation for them.
We are very proud to support these two charities and look forward to working with them in the future. If you would like to hear more about our chosen charities or would like to help support them, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
