Interim Partners’ networking evening
Interim Partners co-hosted a networking evening in conjunction with the Institute of Interim Management and the commercial law firm Orrick on November 9th 2010.
Orrick kindly provided use of their media room. They have recently moved to their new offices which had stunning views towards St Paul’s Cathedral.
Simon Cockshutt of Orrick kicked off the evening and took us through the scope of the Bribery Act of 2010. The Bribery Act 2010 introduces new offences which can make an organisation criminally liable for failing to prevent third parties associated with it from committing bribery on its behalf. Liability can be imposed against individuals in the business as well as on the business itself, and the penalties can be severe - up to 10 years imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine. Simon provided detail on the Act its new offences and what can be done to mitigate any potential corporate or personal liability. He was able to deliver lots of detail in an enthusiastic, witty and highly informed manner.
Simon is a partner in the London office of international law firm Orrick, and focuses on two key areas. The first is on litigation and international arbitration in the areas of general commercial disputes, including joint ventures, share purchase agreements and construction contracts. The second is property-focused litigation, in relation to residential and commercial landlord and tenant matters and the provision of general advice to commercial property clients on dispute potential. I hope you are not in need of advice relating to bribery however if you are Simon is the person to talk to.
Grahame Ball is Director of Group Sourcing & Supply for Colt Technology Services Limited and he gave us an insight into how clients approach the sourcing of Interims. His discussion “Hiring Interims - The Client’s Perspective” was very informative. He shared his views on how tools such as LinkedIn were changing how he networked and stressed the importance the social media was having at the senior end of the market. He offered a group exercise where he identified many in the audience and suggested that he could take references on them from those that were in both their network and his, despite the fact that he did not know some of the audience directly. His insights were useful for all interim managers on how they develop their on-line profile.
Grahame himself held senior Interim positions at BAE Systems, Siemens Communications, Hays Logistics and Newell Rubbermaid, prior to joining Colt in 2005 as an Interim to set up its strategic procurement function. Colt Technology Services Group is a pan European provider of data, voice and managed services to businesses. Colt operates a 13-country, 25,000 km fibre optic network that includes Metropolitan area Networks in 34 major European cities with direct connections into 16,000 buildings and 19 Colt data centres. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange (FTSE 250).
Networking, wine and canapes capped an entertaining evening.
